Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

LiA (Germany) was applicant organization and Spain, Croatia, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Turkey were sending countries.

The main activity brought youth workers, youth leaders and young people with
fewer opportunities from different backgrounds and with different voices together for
dialogue and debate on different perspectives, and values around the topic of
discrimination. The TC also provided an opportunity to become more aware of the
aspects of discrimination and topics related. On one hand, such as human rights,
equality, social inclusion, diversity, and on the other hand, such as racism,
xenophobia, prejudgement, social exclusion etc.

Training methods used & main activities

Training course offered different non-formal training methods used to result in an effective learning atmosphere. In each method, we had space for the debriefing and evaluation. To be able to involve all the participants as much as possible we had various working methods, from energizers, name games, team-building games, to world cafe, role-playing games, brainstormings, group works, roundtables,
debates, visit local youth centre, meeting with local youth, quizzes, city tour, interviews, presentations, videos, self- and group reflections. The participants were given time to set up a project with project partners for future collaboration at the training course.

With this project we fostered new educational approaches and tools which are
sufficient to reach whole aspects of the discrimination and raise public awareness
about it. One of this project aims was to draw attention to the perceived
discrimination and its negative effects on individuals. Participants both studied the
terminological background for the topic of discrimination in general and explored
current theoretical debates. They learned about the types of discrimination based on
sex, race, ethnic origin, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical
appearance, socioeconomic status, educational level etc. They also learned the
ways discrimination happens, such as direct and indirect discrimination, victimization
and harassment. Learning of the participants happened in both theoretical and
practical ways through participatory methods.

Outcomes of the activity

With the TC, we increased awareness of the participants about discrimination
and its undesirable social consequences on individuals, groups, and society, to help
them develop a critical mind to question and to challenge existing social myths and
prejudices against the oppressed groups and individuals and to avoid the
discriminating behaviors based on the harmful stereotypes. Participants examined
and reported on the discriminatory practices and the situations in their residence
countries and thought about what they can do to be part of the solution. They begun
creating strategies and suggestions for solutions and developed suitable tools and
methods to fight against discrimination. Furthermore, they had an opportunity to
practice during the training(delivering their own workshops) and give each other
feedback about various non-formal educational methods used.
