EVS Mid-term-meeting March 2017

The training activity took place
in Hamburg
organised by Verein für internationale und interkulturelle Austausch e. V. (ViA e.V.)
13-17 March 2017

Aims & objectives

In accordance with the requirements for Mid-term-meetings given to us by the German national agency, we had the following aims:

Evaluation of EVS so far, reflection on learning outcomes, networking, transcultural learning, project management, and Youth Pass.

In addition, the participants wanted us to thematise the following:

Historical learning, cultural expression, sign language course (a Deaf participant taught us), and integration in Germany.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The group contained a number of international cultures: from western, central and eastern Europe, as well as some from the Balkans and a Kurd from the far east of Turkey.

I worked together with a trainer colleague with German citizenship, supported by an Orgateamer who also has German citizenship.

Training methods used & main activities

Seminar planning shared together with volunteers via them writing answers to questions ("what themes related to your voluntary service do you wish to talk about?, "what socio-political themes do you wish to talk about?") on cards.

Reflections on voluntary service so far via posters - "if my EVS was a film".

Facilitated workshops led by volunteers through providing structure and logical support.

Tour by myself about colonialism and refugees in Hamburg.

Outcomes of the activity

The seminar was highly rated by the participants. Very few of them had problems in their host organisations, therefore our focus on getting them to plan their own projects was successful, in that eight of the nineteen participants tried out workshops they wanted to do in their host organisations (the others already knew what they wanted to do); in addition, one showed a film on political activism among "Generation Y" and led a discussion.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

Group-building and -process management. Seminar plan determination. The leading of workshops about learning, evaluation and historical narratives in Europe. Facilitation of workshops and leading of tour.

I worked on this training for 5 days as a full time trainer.
