Aims & objectives

European Citizenship Trimester Programme have started in 2008 focused on European Citizenship.
Fostering and increasing opportunities for a growing number of young people across Europe to go on an exchange and enjoy an intra-European intercultural learning experience with AFS quality standards, the project is in line with the AFS mission and vision. This is a truly new programme, with a European connotation and a specific added value through its focus on European citizenship and identity, especially because of its highlight: the EFIL’s ECTP Brussels camp. Before returning to their home countries, the participants had the opportunity to share their experience with students from various other European countries during a joint 3-day meeting. This idea of bringing all participants together in the capital of Europe, was a substantial added value to the trimester stay for all students involved, and highlighted the European dimension of their exchange term.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The trainer team consisted of 13 members who will be co-operating with the ECTP Prep Team. The trainers were from Belgium, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Russia, Britain, Iceland and Denmark.

Participants were between 15-18. The no of participants were 94 and they were from 15 different countries.

Training methods used & main activities

Trainers had 3 hours of workshop sessions around the topics of European Values, Global Citizenship and Readaptation to their Home Cultures.

Training methodologies included poster preparation of the experiences, body music and jazz, sketches, discussion groups, lectures and presentation, video screening and reflection, games.

In my session "StereoEurope" I asked participants about the stereotypings they have experienced and we discussed around the topic of stereotyping in Europe, later they have created posters on stereotypes in Europe and we ended up sharing how we can struggle with this.

Another one was about "Nonviolence resistance and Body Music" No papers, no pens...With body music techniques, we did a improvisation session and used slogans to create our own small flashmob for youth rights.

Outcomes of the activity

After both trainings, we have done performances, one with posters and the other one with body music. Body music video can be seen here:
