Aims & objectives

The aim of the project is to reach up to 600 students in the Gothenburg area, to reduce racism in schools through good examples and positive stories from Sweden.
The book DNL contains 11 stories dealing with stereotypes and racism.
During the workshop I will give various exercises, define racism, show a film, read selected capitals from the book and discuss both the file and the book.
I will also ask questions about how to combat racism in school.
In the end, you should be able to brainstorm solutions and how you can make your lessons from the workshop work at your school.
Through IM's project Det nya landet - Startar i skolan, IM wants to contribute to the goal in the Swedish School Act, which states that all students should be able to train their democratic abilities by "arguing, listening, putting yourself into someone else's perspective, showing understanding and empathy, discuss and debate" (Skolverket).

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

ca 600 students, teachers, youth workers, development officers and NGO staff.

Training methods used & main activities

In Det nya landet – Startar i skolan, IM offers Swedish upper secondary and folk high schools a complete educational material to facilitate the schools' anti-racist work and value-based work. During the autumn, IM aims to reach over 2,000 high school and folk high school students through schools carrying out a values foundation day. IM has developed a half- and a full-day program where issues such as prejudice, norms, racism, integration and treatment are highlighted and discussed. During the theme day, the pupils/students will work based on the material produced in the form of a book, a film and a method material. Before the theme days are carried out, IM will train teachers from the participating schools as well as volunteers. The volunteers, together with IM staff, will be on site during the schools' theme days to support the teachers in the implementation of the value foundation day and to answer any questions about the material. Together we create the new country. In this case, it starts at school.
