Deliberative Democracy : A Path for Youth to Participate

Aims & objectives

- To strengthen the understanding of participatory methodologies and ways of participation of young people
- To create synergies on democratic principles and mechanisms in different EU and neighboring countries
- To promote the deliberative democratic mechanisms among young people
- To qualify youth workers in the field of democracy and participation for making the usage of new and innovative ways of participation
- To increase the engagement of young people by promoting different ways of participation throughout local actions
- To create partnerships for future cooperation on democracy, youth and participation topics

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

Target group :
- 18-50 years old
- has been involved in non-formal education context in local level as youth trainer or youth leader
- Motivation to take part in a mutual learning process in an intercultural setting
- has interest to work on participation, the role of youth work in this process and democratic participation - sensitive to the participation and engagement of young people topic and willing to implement actions
- has a sufficient level of English ( B1-C1 )
- less knowledge of non-formal education either democracy topic

Training methods used & main activities

The methods were based on the non-formal, participatory-based and needs orientated. Facilitators used exercieses amongst others from EU Training Manuals such Compass, Mosaic, T-Kit and Domino Pack developed by Council of Europe and/or the European Commission. In addition to that, the trainers used their own tool kits or toolkits from other own kits. Those methods foster a high participation rate involving the participants actively in determining their learning progress by creating learning moments that feature a high emotional and cognitive involvement.

Outcomes of the activity

The training was a success and new methods were developed as a result.
