THE GRAND LOBBY: Transferring Micro-Habitat Biodiversity and Eco-Literacy Methods through Youth Work

1. Context and Origin of the Project
The "ECO-LOBBY" project originates from a genuine local observation and real-life realization in Kozan (Adana, Türkiye). Kozan hosts a Guinness World Record-holding Bee Hotel, a massive structure designed to protect solitary bees and beneficial insects. However, an internal needs analysis revealed a striking gap: the vast majority of local youth, educators, and community members were completely unaware of its existence and purpose. In mainstream society, bees are almost exclusively associated with honey production or feared for stinging. The crucial ecological role of solitary bees—which do not produce honey, are non-aggressive, and are responsible for pollinating over 80% of flowering plants and crops—remains largely invisible. This "lack of awareness" regarding a world-record structure in our own backyard highlighted a urgent need for comprehensive eco-literacy and nature-based youth work.

2. Broadened Scope and Core Themes
THE GRAND LOBBY uses the record-holding Bee Hotel not as a static landmark, but as an interactive gateway to address broader environmental crises. The project does not limit its scope to a single species; instead, it covers the entire ecological chain through three primary pillars:

Micro-Habitats & Insect Biodiversity: Addressing the housing crisis of solitary bees, ladybugs, lacewings, and other beneficial insects caused by rapid urbanization and habitat loss.

Sustainable Agriculture & Permaculture: Highlighting the severe damage caused by chemical pesticides on pollinators and soil health, while promoting organic farming, permaculture, and biological pest control.

Eco-Literacy & Ecosystem Services: Educating youth workers on how to convey complex ecological concepts (such as pollination, soil conservation, and biodiversity loss) through engaging, hands-on, non-formal learning methods.

3. Objectives and Key Activities
The project aims to empower youth workers with innovative outdoor education tools and transform public perception from fear to active conservation. Over a 12-month period, the project incorporates a two-way mobility framework:

Advanced Planning Visit (APV): Leaders from the host and partner organizations will meet in advance to align the non-formal curriculum, establish risk management policies, and ensure inclusive participant selection.

Main Youth Workers' Mobility (Türkiye): A 5-day intensive training course in Adana/Kozan featuring field study visits to the record-holding Bee Hotel, technical insights from local ecological experts, and practical workshops where participants build QR-coded micro-habitats using zero-cost, natural materials (pinecones, bamboo, wood, stone).

Bilateral Method Transfer & Dissemination: Following the main activity, representatives from Değişim Öncüleri Derneği will visit partner countries (e.g., the Netherlands) to participate in follow-up workshops, deliver dissemination actions, and adapt the developed tools into European youth work settings.

4. Public Awareness and Digital Campaigning
To ensure wide societal impact, participants will design interactive awareness tools, including short video campaigns (Reels/TikTok) targeting youth, and install QR-coded insect hotels in public spaces (school gardens and parks). Scanning the QR codes will direct citizens to accessible digital guides explaining the function of micro-habitats and dispelling common myths about solitary bees.

5. Expected Impact
By combining local field experience with European cooperation, ECO-LOBBY will produce a multilingual "Micro-Habitats & Eco-Literacy Practical Guidebook", enhance the international capacity of participating NGOs, and inspire youth across Europe to take concrete, local actions for biodiversity preservation.
