Summary:
The Millennium Declaration was adopted in 2000 by all of the (then) 189 Member States of the United Nations General Assembly. This Declaration launched a decisive process for the global cooperation in the 21st century. With this instrument, there was the chance to give a strong attention to all questions related with development and to the central challenges faced by humanity in the beginning of this millennium. With the approval of this declaration, there was also the approval of the following Millennium Development Goals (MDGs):
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger;
- Achieve universal primary education;
- Promote gender equality and empower women;
- Reduce child mortality rates;
- Improve maternal health;
- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases;
- Ensure environmental sustainability;
- Develop a global partnership for development.

This declaration as well the established goals were created to join common international and European agreements and also concrete commitments to ensure the improvement of humanity's destiny and to reinforce that human rights in what concerns to all these measures are respected. These were established to answer to problems felt by all societies as well as to search and to reinforce the potentialities of each society.

Through this youth exchange, ACV is planning to give the opportunity to 30 youngsters and 5 youth leaders to understand what is the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). We plan to think all together about these goals with the help of team-building games, debates, group discussions and visits to Portuguese organizations working in the areas mentioned in the MDGs.
ACV wants to raise participants' awareness for all the problems felt on an international level in this new Millennium.
