Hip-Hop for Social Cohesion and Active Citizenship

We will look at how the pillars of Hip-Hop (which are MC'ing, DJ'ing, Break Dancing and Graffiti) can bring about positive social change and engage young people

This is a 8-day training course (including 2 days travel) that will take place in the UK, 31st March to 7th April 2013.

The project will bring 40 participants 10 different countries. The project will look at the role that Hip-Hop has played in supporting young people's active citizenship for positive change, and created stronger ties of social cohesion amongst its communities.

The aim of the project is through non-formal education to demonstrate to participants how the pillars of Hip-Hop (which are MC'ing, DJ'ing, Break Dancing and Graffiti) can bring about positive social change and engage young people to play a positive role within their community.

The initial idea was inspired by the Zulu Nation's project in New York, 1970's, who used these pillars to combat gang violence, crime and drug addiction and create a positive culture that still influences the world today.

The main objectives:

• Support participants to develop their knowledge in these arts
• Allow participants to present their culture, learn about others, and foster an environment to identifying them selves and European Citizens
• Enable participants to see themselves as agents of positive change, and active citizens that can bring about social cohesion through non-formal education and Hip-Hop
• Create new European partnerships for further cooperation, exchange of best practice and networking

We are looking for partners from EU member countries. Each participating organizations will bring 4 participants who will fully participate in the programme and each country will give two presentations. The first will be on an example of any or all areas of Hip-Hop have brought about positive change in the community or country. The second will be a cultural presentation of their country and culture, which will be accompanied by food and drink for participans to experience. We ask that each group try to make their presentation informative, entertaining and most of all, fun.

The working language of the project is English, so unfortunately all participants would need to be able to communicate in this language.
