Democratic Teaching in an AI-Enhanced Classroom

Democratic Teaching in an AI-Enhanced Classroom

Context and Rationale: The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into educational contexts has sparked both opportunities and challenges. While AI tools promise efficiency and personalization in teaching, they also risk undermining democratic principles in education, such as inclusivity, critical thinking, and shared decision-making. Educators are in urgent need of strategies that align AI integration with democratic teaching methods to foster environments where students remain active participants in their learning processes.
Building on the reflective practices highlighted in recent research (Kolber, S. (2024). In pursuit of a Socratic, democratic classroom: Combining Modern Technologies with Ancient Teaching Techniques and ), this project seeks to explore and promote a pedagogy that uses AI responsibly while reinforcing democratic teaching principles. By focusing on teacher training, curriculum co-design, and reflective practices, EDTAI will address the gap in professional development for educators in this area.
Objectives:
1. Enhance Teacher Capacity: Develop and implement training modules to empower educators to integrate AI into classrooms while preserving democratic teaching values.
2. Foster Reflective Practices: Create a framework for ongoing reflective practices, enabling teachers and students to critically assess the role of AI in education.
3. Promote Inclusive Learning Environments: Ensure that AI tools are used to support diverse student needs without marginalizing any group.
4. Encourage Collaborative Decision-Making: Strengthen student and teacher collaboration in educational decision-making processes, leveraging AI as a supportive tool.
5. Disseminate Best Practices: Share insights and tools across EU to build a pan-European community of practice.
Target Groups:
• Secondary school teachers.
• Educational leaders and policymakers.
• Students aged 10-18.
• Teacher trainers and curriculum developers.
Partnership and Collaboration: The project will bring together:
