Problems addressed by Nanziga Women Development Initiative
1. Youth unemployment due to lack of market-ready skills and digital illiteracy
2. Lack of skilling opportunities for out of school youth
3. Rising teenage/unwanted pregnancies and lack of awareness about Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR)
4. Financial illiteracy and lack of entrepreneurship skills among youth
5. Rising rates of Gender Based Violence/Violence Against Women & limited make involvement

Between 2021 – 2022: With support from Children Rights and Violence Prevention Fund (CRVPF) – funded by Mastercard Foundation - NAWODI trained and graduated 350 young girls who received certificates in Modern tailoring and design (100 girls), hairdressing and cosmetology (250) and all the 300 hundred girls acquired skills in making hair shampoo and liquid soap.
2023: With funding from THIERWORD UK, NAWODI trained mobilized and trained 70 girls in hairdressing, 35 girls in hairdressing and cosmetology and all the 105 Girls were equipped with skills in making shampoo and liquid soap making.
Secured funding 2024 -2028 to execute Empower Youth Through Data and Community Development (EYDCD)
Economic Empowerment of Youth (EEY). Nanziga Women Development Initiative (NAWODI) is keen to youth economic empowerment. In addition to skilling youth, NAWODI equips youth with entrepreneurships and financial literacy skills to learn and apply essential skills in small-scale business planning, resource mobilization, saving in groups, marketing using Facebook and whatsup, customer care, record keeping, price setting and profit and profit calculation. NAWODI has also formed four (4) Village Saving and Loans Association (VSLAs) among the trained teenage mothers and youth.

Enterprise/business development: Nanziga Women Development Initiative (NAWODI) conduct quarterly business training to equip women and girls with necessary skilling to mobilize financial resources, start, profitably run and sustain small-scale businesses to escape poverty. The skills imparted to women and girls include Trade and gender, business planning, selection, marketing and sale, profit calculation, customer care.
-Formation of Village Saving and Loans Association (VSLAs): We mobilize young women and men doing small-scale businesses to form saving groups. The saving groups are equipped with digitalization skills to transact online (Save and withdraw money online) to develop their businesses.
Sexual Reproductive Health awareness: Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) and Teenage Pregnancy Reduction. NAWODI is aware of the increasing teenage pregnancies in Uganda, which is at 25% pregnancy rate according to Ministry of Health. Over 644,955 teenage pregnancies were recorded during the COVID-19 lockdown in Uganda between 2020-2022; Within the targeted project area, Kampala recorded 8,460 while Wakiso District recorded 10,439 teenage pregnancy cases (UNFPA Fact Sheet 2021). Since we train out of school teenagers, teenage mothers who are vulnerable to unwanted pregnancies, we conduct sensitization sessions on quarterly basis to empower young women with knowledge about their rights, hope to prevent and respond to sexual violence, where to get SHR services. With Funding from GAIA EATH INITIATIVE – NAWODI sensitized 150 adolescent/teenage mothers and young women about family planning, prevention of HIV and STIs
Ending Violence Against Women and Girls: Cognizant of the fact that Gender-based violence (GBV) is an everyday threat for Ugandan women and girls. (National demographic data from 2020 reveals that 56% of married women aged 15-49 reported having suffered physical and/or sexual violence by a husband) (Uganda Bureau of Statistics, 2021). NAWODI conducts awareness-raising training about Gender Based Violence, prevention, response to sexual violence, intimate partner violence, early marriages, physical assault, emotional violence and discrimination against women. NAWODI also strives to increase male involvement in ending violence against women through reaching out to male spouses
Agricultural and food security: For the rural chapter, NAWODI mobilizes women and girls and equips them with modern knowledge and skills in modern farming, climate smart agricultural skills to keep producing even during dry seasons. Farmer categories we support include; vegetable farmers, maize, bean and banana farmers
Partnership and advocacy
NAWODI continues to seek for lasting/multiyear partnerships with development partners within Uganda and outside Uganda. Our donor intelligence efforts are continuous and we seek to maintain relationships with the donors with whom we have already collaborated. We are also seeking to establish partnership with Private Sector Foundation to secure funds so that we can reach out to more teenage mothers since these are available in the communities suffering from unemployment due to lack of market-ready skills.
