In 1994 a group of parents with children who had cancer decided to set up an organization called Peter Pan.
Their aim was to give support to other families who were dealing with the same challenges they had faced before.
In particular, they wanted to create a house to accommodate the families who had to move from their country home in order to have their children treated in the capital's best pediatric centers.
Their personal experience taught them how to meet with the specific needs of these families; providing free accommodation, financial, emotional and practical support.
The original parents were soon joined by a large group of volunteers (about 200); all bringing the precious gift of their enthusiasm, expertise and empathy to the organization.
At present Peter Pan is able to accommodate more than 30 families in rooms with private bathrooms and with many common areas to socialize in.
Moreover the organization offers a large range of services: schools and playgrounds for children, outings, psychological support, occupational therapy etc.
The organization does not receive any financial support from Italian authorities and relies solely on private contributions and donations.
In 2004 Peter Pan was awarded with a gold medal from the President of the Italian Republic for merit in the Public Health Sector.
Peter Pan is a part of the National Confederation of Parent Organizations (FIAGOP) which is a member of CCI (Children Cancer International).
