Tell Stories That Matter: Citizen Journalism for Civil Society

Training Course

11-16 January 2027 | Bilbao/Getxo, Spain

Enter our international online competition for a chance to join a 6-day training in Bilbao/Getxo, Spain! Develop citizen journalism skills, strengthen your story telling with expert guidance and get it published in a media outlet.

About the training:

The six-day international training (11-17 January 2027, with travel on 10/17) in Bilbao/Getxo, Spain, is the second learning activity of the project CJ SUPERHEROES – From Readers to Leaders: Citizen Journalism Superheroes. It is aimed at people working in or engaged with non-formal education, youth work and civil society organisations who are interested in developing their storytelling and citizen journalism skills. This includes youth workers, educators, trainers, facilitators, communication and PR practitioners, volunteers and other civil society actors who want to communicate their work and the issues they care about more effectively. No prior experience in journalism or storytelling is required – amateurs and beginners are explicitly welcome and encouraged to apply!

During the training, participants will deepen their knowledge and practical skills in citizen journalism by exploring the content of the project's three learning modules. They will work on developing and refining journalistic stories, receive expert feedback and guidance, and learn how to bring their contributions to a wider audience, including through publication in reputable media outlets.

Beyond individual skill development, the training will explore how citizen journalism and storytelling can be used in non-formal learning, youth work and civil society to promote media literacy, critical thinking, active citizenship and public engagement. Participants will also gain methods and practical knowledge that they can share with colleagues and introduce into their own organisations – for example, to strengthen communication, PR, dissemination activities or learning opportunities for young people and other target groups.

How to apply and how participants will be selected:

All applicants interested in taking part in the training must first enter the project's International Online Citizen Journalism Competition (see attached flyer for details). We strongly encourage applicants to submit their competition entries by 8 November, the official competition deadline; however, to allow more people to apply for the training, KulturLife will exceptionally accept entries submitted as training applications until 20 November.

Participants can submit an original contribution in text, video or audio format, addressing a topic they consider important to their local community. It is important to please note that you are applying via KulturLife.

The training places will be offered according to the competition rankings, with the four highest-ranked participants from each partner country being invited first. If any of these participants are unable or do not wish to attend, the opportunity will be offered to the next eligible participant in the ranking. This means that taking part in the competition is the first step towards joining the international training.

The training combines practical skill development, expert mentoring and international exchange, giving participants the opportunity to strengthen their storytelling abilities and bring new approaches and skills back to their professional or organisational contexts.
