Ecocinema Lab: crafting desirable futures through animation

Training Course

22 January - 2 February 2026 | Pau, France, France

Participants will learn how to craft animation films while reflecting on the environmental impact of the audiovisual industry.

In today’s media landscape, most films that imagine the future portray it from a dystopian perspective, which usually bring audiences to anxiety and paralization. Ecocinema Lab aims to question these dominant narratives and explore how cinema can help us imagine alternative, desirable futures.

This Training Course invites participants to reflect on the environmental footprint of the film industry and to experiment with low-impact, handmade approaches to storytelling. We will explore animation techniques that allow us to craft stories with minimal resources and low environmental impact, using found materials, textures, and collective creativity.

The Ecocinema Lab combines reflection and practice: we will discuss the ecological impact of filmmaking, explore animation techniques, and experiment with new ways of storytelling that value creativity, attention, and care over speed and consumption.

By the end of the week, participants will have produced short movies that show how another way of making cinema and imagining the future is possible.
