Adbusting: We alter military billboards in public spaces—using scissors, paint, and glue—until they are recognizable for what they truly are.
Using Communication Guerrilla Tactics and Adbusting Against Military Advertising?
According to figures from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military spending is at a historic high. Europe bears a share of the responsibility for this. This trend is also reflected in the increasing presence of military advertising in the public sphere. However, when military forces leave their barracks and enter spaces accessible to everyone, they become visible—and thus open to criticism and challenge. This applies all the more to military advertising, given that few members of the general public actually like advertisements, and the police do not guard billboards around the clock. This is precisely where we aim to intervene:
We are looking for initiatives interested in networking across Europe to engage in creative protest and resistance against military advertising.
What are the military's strategies and tactics? How do we counter them? How do these dynamics impact civil society and the media? What forms of action do we employ in response—and why?
What role do communication guerrilla tactics and adbusting play in our daily political activism?
We aim to explore these questions through a Europe-wide collaborative network.
And then—to do something with that knowledge:
- Stage a protest featuring adbusting and subvertising at a pan-European symbol of militarization?
- Organize training workshops on adbusting and subvertising in collaboration with partners across Europe?
