The School of Mayors

“The school of mayors” is a project that aims to raise awareness over the importance of participating in democratic and civic activities at local, national and European level in more than 10 communities and countries around Europe. Our objective is to empower formal and non-formal leaders with the necessary competences and knowledge in order to develop communities with the help of public bodies.

Engagement of public organizations is a valuable tool that could teach the citizens important aspects regarding participation through volunteering, solidarity, the need of participation in democratic decision making, as well as being part of a bigger community called Europe, its history, values and opportunities. The project also has as objective to discuss and promote intercultural sensibility among citizens, in order to achieve a common feeling of understanding more cultures, traditions and accepting easier differences between people.

The main activities will be: a seminar (held in Romania, which will involve 35 participants, all workers in civic institutions and NGOs from the partner countries), a study visit in Portugal (where a mayor will share with us good practices and how he manages to improve the system with diverse initiatives that encourage people to engage more) and a conference (in Romania, that will be dedicated to more people that want to find out about methods, tools, activities, good practices and international opportunities in order to develop their competences and to help the community from a public body).

Through these activities, we will target people and groups with high interest in development of communities by actively participation of citizens. They will learn how to engage people, what kind of needs there are, how to address them and to raise the engagement level to a European approach, especially for public bodies. The project will empower leaders to create European attitudes in their communities and they will learn how to implement the right projects.
