The Roots

The Roots is a project from and for volunteers where we plan on going back to our roots.

The objectives of our project are:

- LEARNING FROM OUR ROOTS:

1. TO RECONNECT WITH NATURE
To make ourselves aware of all the luxury we live in and to experience what it’s like to survive with
only the basics. During the project, we want to go back to our roots by returning to nature itself and
devoting ourselves to a full week without distractions from our normal lives. By doing that, we will
realise that nature already gives us everything we need to survive and that is possible to return to a
life where we can solely rely on nature. We will re-experience life with mother nature and be more
aware of the differences between living life in nature and the busy urban life. Lastly, we would like to
make the all of the participants aware that nature is precious and that we have to take care of it.

2. TO INCLUDE NATURE IN ACTIVITIES
We think that it is very important to incorporate nature in daily activities. That is one of the reasons
we want to create this project. We want to learn more about nature to be able to teach others about it.
To prepare for this, every organisation will acquire a survival skill prior to the project with the
objective to impart it to all of the other organisations during the project. That way we will train each
other about how to involve more nature and give each other renewed inspiration for such activities. At
the same time, we will gain multiple survival skills, useful not only during the project but also later in
life.

3. THE POWER OF REAL LIFE ENCOUNTERS
In our modern society we always have gadgets like smartphones and social media as a part of our
daily lives. We need our smartphones to find a partner or to communicate with friends. In our project
that won't be the case, because it will be internet- and smartphone-free. All participants will have to
speak with each other and talk in real life. We will be getting to know each other without social media
and therefore we will come to know each other in a better and different way. Partly, this will be an
experiment to see what the reaction of the group will be but partly also because we wanted a break
from people using their phones always. We want to feel that we can regularly talk to people instead of
using our phones. We want to be able to go about our day without having to check our social media
all of the time.

4. DEVELOPING SURVIVAL SKILLS
In the first few days of the project the organisations will teach each other different survival skills. We
will then use those skills to build up to a self-surviving community, wherein we will spend 24 hours
together. During those hours, the participants are supposed to leave behind all of their connections
with the real world and devote themselves to living with the others.

- WORKING TOGETHER

1. TO DEVELOP INSIGHT IN OTHER CULTURES
By working together with organisations from different countries we will get to know their way of life.
By living, eating, talking and doing activities with them during the project, we will learn more about
the other participating organisations and more importantly about their cultures. Gaining insight into
other cultures is of great benefit for youngsters because it can create a broader understanding of the world. That can also help the youth to better understand people they already know with different
cultural identities.
We also want to see how the different organisations and cultures react to staying away from society
and working together for 24 hours and what kind of bond it will create.

2. TO CREATE FRIENDSHIPS AND WORK TOGETHER
Participants from four different countries will come together and live with each other for a week.
During that week, they will learn to work together and create bonds and/or friendships with each
other. They should come to be close enough so that the 24 hours of being only with the group will be
full of joy and happiness.
