Subjective Mapping (Training Course)

This project's main objective is to discover, represent, explore and learn from the emotional layer of our perception of the space.

About the project
The proposed project will bring together a group of twenty people which daily work focus on the youth at risk or social inclusion. The idea is to converge the participants’ extraordinary multiplicity and diversity of experiences, perceptions and views, and the emotive storytelling power of maps. We set out to explore in a collaborative art project that begins in a personal level but expands to a social experience. The idea is to assemble a collaborative portrait of a space based on numerous individual experiences, memories, and subjective impressions (not only from the participants, but also from the locals). Through our subjective map design, we aim at engaging the participants in a self reflecting process about their conception of space. We also want to engage the maps users in this creative process of space appropriation through mapping, by leaving them blank spaces to fill, personal experiences to express and foster their engagement into the space perception and use.

Training in France, 1-15 June 2017
To reach a bigger socio-cultural impact we plan a first training in a rural area of France. During this activity, the participants will have the unique opportunity to experience and explore subjective mapping as a tool that they can later on use with youth.

Training in Turkey, 15-25 October 2017
A second training in Turkey will give them a chance to try out this tool with youth at risk, by working with young Turkish and Kurdish locals as well as Syrian and Iraqi refugees. Their experience with this target group will help them understand better the perception of life experience of these youngsters through their representation of intimate spaces and journeys. Create and explore their imaginary maps of the European space will probably open the way to diverse learning opportunities, for the youth as well as the participants.

Partner's tasks
As a partner, we will need you to firstly apply by sending us an email with the PIF; secondly, once selected, by signing and stamping the mandate; then, if the project is approve, by joining us to develop and design the program and a dissemination plan; finally, by selecting participants to be part of the aforementioned project.

Project background and outcome
Subjective Mapping aims at bringing together youth workers, geographers, artists, local communities and youth at risk to discover, represent, explore and learn from the emotional layer of our perception of the space. In other words, by creating collective subjective maps or living archive of memories of places, our objective is to develop a new understanding of mapping as a non formal learning tool, especially relevant to the topics of intercultural dialogue, community building and active citizenship.

Through non-formal learning methods, the participants will lead workshops for each other, share skills and foster their personal and professional development. This will strengthen their key competences, enrich their set of methods and tools, consequently improving the quality of education, training and youth work throughout Europe. It will also help them to develop a sense of European citizenship and identity. They will develop their networks. They will be given the chance to start developing new projects together. Globally, our project aims to develop the quality of youth work, strengthen the cooperation between art, formal and non formal education sectors and the labor market as well as supporting and developing a youth policy based on knowledge and research. At the level of the partner organizations, we intend to improve the capacities, attractiveness and the international dimension of organizations, so that they can offer activities and programs best suited to the needs of youngsters in Europe and elsewhere. In this, our goals are consistent with those of the Erasmus+ program and mobility projects.
