Shift Gears, Save the Winter!

KA152 Youth Exchange on climate action & micromobility. Connecting winter sports and cycling to reduce carbon footprint.

Project Summary & Concept
"Shift Gears, Save the Winter!" is a youth exchange concept that connects winter sports enthusiasts and cyclists around a shared goal: climate action and eco-friendly mobility.

The project addresses the cause-and-effect relationship of climate change through a unique lens. Winter sports lovers bring the "problem" to the table (melting glaciers, shorter ski seasons), while cyclists bring a tangible "solution" (micromobility, reducing carbon footprints).

Our Core Message: What you do in the city during summer (choosing a bike over a car) directly impacts whether you will be able to ski in the mountains during winter.

Main Activities During the Exchange
Carbon Footprint Simulation: Role-playing games and interactive workshops where young people calculate the CO2 emissions of different transport methods.

Video Campaign Creation: Participants will produce short TikTok/Reels and social media content to raise awareness about how cycling can help save our winters.

"Bike Kitchen" Workshop: In the spirit of the circular economy, participants will learn basic bicycle maintenance. They will repair and upcycle old, abandoned bikes, which will then be donated to local communities or people in need.

"Leave No Trace" Outdoor Training: Practical outdoor sessions focusing on how to practice sports in nature responsibly, ensuring zero harm to the local flora and fauna.

The Combined Low-Carbon Challenge: Planning and executing a multi-day mini-trip where the group moves from one location to another exclusively using sustainable mobility (cycling, skating, or skiing depending on the weather), minimizing the logistical carbon footprint.

Project overview

Shift Gears, Save the Winter! is a project by
Asociația Club Sportiv pentru Schi și Ciclism
taking place
from 2027-04-02 till 2028-04-17
This project relates to:
Youth Exchanges
and is focusing on:
  • Environment
  • European citizenship
  • Intercultural dialogue
  • Non-formal learning
  • Sports
  • Sustainable development
  • Urban/rural development
  • Volunteering
This project can include young people with fewer opportunities like
  • Social obstacles
  • Economic obstacles
  • Geographical obstacles
Our project explicitly targets young people facing fewer opportunities, focusing on three interconnected barriers: Economic obstacles: Winter sports and high-quality cycling equipment are financially inaccessible for many low-income families. This project bridges this gap by providing full funding for these activities, ensuring that financial background is not a barrier to experiencing mountain sports and active mobility. Furthermore, the "Bike Kitchen" workshop directly tackles economic barriers by teaching youth how to repair and upcycle affordable transport options. Geographical obstacles: We actively involve youth from rural, remote, or structurally disadvantaged regions where public transport is limited, and opportunities for international mobility or specialized climate education are scarce. This exchange connects them to a European network and empowers them to bring sustainable mobility solutions back to their isolated communities. Social obstacles: We target young people facing social exclusion, risk of isolation, or cultural barriers. By engaging them in highly practical, teamwork-oriented non-formal activities (such as video campaigning, role-plays, and the low-carbon outdoor challenge), we boost their self-esteem, social skills, and sense of European citizenship. Support provided: To ensure full inclusion, we offer tailored mentorship through experienced group leaders, adapted learning paces, gender-balanced and safe environments, and fully covered logistical support (travel, accommodation, and specialized gear) so that participants can fully focus on their personal and social development.
