Sailing the Mayflower to Equality and Justice

This project aims to enhance community cohesion by focusing on the local migrant and asylum-seeking community in the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing

This project aims to enhance community cohesion by focusing on the local migrant and asylum-seeking community in the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing.
Our project is located in Rotherhithe, one of London's most divided areas but with communities with over 200 languages spoken and 40 cultures and religions practised. Recent EHRC statistics, however, show that hate and the attitudes leading to attacks especially against migrants and asylum seekers are increasing in the area.

Our Project increased awareness around issues of migration and asylum including cultural awareness and the contribution that these communities have made to our local area.

To this end, we ran an online competition through our project website where young people csubmitted various forms of art (e.g. poetry, digital art, paintings, music, videos) on the theme of immigration in Rotherhithe and having the Mayflower as an inspiration and we made these submissions available through a project website, but also blogs, social media and an e-book

We also brought local people together including young migrants, refugees, policymakers, families and children through an open exhibition that will showcased the submissions of the competition.
