ROMANI HOPE IN GREECE
EPEK is asking for partners, ngo’s and other government bodies from Europe to implement a common project.
PRESENT SITUATION for Roma in Korinthia
There are two Roma settlements in rural areas in Korinthia Greece, in the village of Examilia and in the village of Zevgolatio. A common feature of the camps is poverty, delinquency and drugs and the lack of training opportunities for young Roma and their social exclusion. There are no training opportunities and therefore there is no possibility of escape from the ill-health of settlements.
Roma needs
Young Roma must gain access to cultural goods such as education, ecology, literature, arts. This will increase the awareness of their democratic participation in their community. Also, the Roma will acquire knowledge and skills that will protect the environment and their own health from the misuse of the materials they come into contact with, such as, hazardous waste.
Aims of the project
Τhe aim of the project is the understanding of participatory democracy in practice and the defense of vulnerable social groups of Roma communities. Also to strengthen the group of young Roma who will meet Roma from other European countries and find out new ways to deal with the authorities and volunteer civil ngo’s, so that they can take part in the decisions taken to enhance good governance and the effectiveness of the policies implemented for Roma at all levels of public administration. Meetings will be held with authorities, ministries, judicial authorities, the Parliament, the European Commission and, in general, youth policy makers, and in particular young Roma. Seminars and round tables will be held. Young ROMA will know which decision-makers are making decisions and what decisions they make, the processes by which these decisions are made, and how they can influence themselves policies. In this way, the group of young Roma will be supported in order to be able to get out of social exclusion and to help the local Roma communities in Corinthia, Examilia and Zevgolatio Roma camps.
