Reclaim the real

Across Europe, an increasing number of young people experience feelings of loneliness, emotional disconnection and social isolation, despite being constantly connected through digital technologies. Recent studies show that more than half of young Europeans report moderate to severe loneliness, a phenomenon strongly linked to the pressure of social media, permanent online comparison and reduced opportunities for authentic face-to-face interaction.
These challenges are even more pronounced for young people with fewer opportunities, including those from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, rural areas, migrant communities or marginalized groups. Limited access to safe spaces, non-formal learning opportunities and supportive social environments often reinforces isolation and exclusion.
Reclaim the Real was created as a response to these realities. This Youth Exchange offers young people a temporary but intentional break from digital devices in a natural environment, creating the conditions for genuine human connection, self-expression and emotional well-being. By stepping away from phones, social media and online performance pressure, participants are invited to slow down, be fully present and engage with others in a more authentic and meaningful way.
The project is based on non-formal education methods and combines creative activities, outdoor and nature-based experiences, group discussions, reflection sessions and intercultural learning. Through these activities, participants explore themes such as loneliness, mental well-being, self-expression, trust, empathy and digital balance, while developing social, emotional and intercultural competences.
For young people aged 18 to 25, the project addresses a clear need for authentic social interaction, emotional expression and practical tools to manage digital pressure and stress. It supports participants in building self-confidence, strengthening interpersonal skills and reflecting critically on their relationship with digital technologies, with the aim of adopting more conscious and sustainable digital habits after the exchange.
At the same time, Reclaim the Real responds to the needs of youth organizations involved in the project. It offers an opportunity to develop, test and exchange innovative non-formal education methodologies that combine creativity, nature-based learning and reflection on digital lifestyles. These methods are designed to be transferable and adaptable to different local contexts.
The project also aims to strengthen long-term European cooperation between partner organizations, fostering mutual learning, follow-up activities and future joint initiatives. By bringing together young people from different cultural backgrounds, Reclaim the Real promotes inclusion, active participation, solidarity and a stronger sense of European citizenship.
