Promoting positive perceptions and greater social awareness towards persons with disabilities through Inclusion Clubs in Schools

Mitigating stigma/social exclusion of children with disability in mainstream primary schools (ages 6-12) through inclusion clubs that are pupil led in Uganda.

Global estimates of birth defects indicate that 7.9 million children are born with birth defects each year and of these 90% are born in low- and middle-income countries like Uganda. Article 21(2) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948, states: "Everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country". Despite this, PWDs in particular those of SBH people in Uganda face vast difficulties in accessing services, facilities and opportunities.
There are a number of reasons behind poor attitude and poor accessibility in the central region of Uganda; however, probably the root of the problem is lack of awareness of disability and the needs of children and youth with SBH. This results in them being marginalized and excluded from mainstream society.

People with a disability cope with stigma and discrimination in their everyday lives. Not being socially accepted is a big area of concern for lots of people with a disability.
Stigma in the school environment has effects on full school attendance, social participation and performance of CWDs. It is presented in form of abuse, labeling/nicknaming and physical exclusion.

Due to stigma and discrimination, they also face problems in expressing themselves and continuing to manage their conditions within the school environment.

The overall objective of this project is to promote positive perceptions and greater social awareness towards persons with disabilities in a school setting for 6 months.
The main activities that will form the core of this project are: formation of inclusion clubs in primary schools, Drama and inclusive games.

NB. We are looking for an EU based organization to develop the Idea and submit on our Behalf as the ordinating partner.
