Project Akdamar

The purpose is to share local myths and legends with each other and be able to discuss the impact of storytelling on the cultures of societies.

Akdamar Island is an island located in Van Lake in Eastern Turkey and contains the Akdamar Church. There is a common folk story about where the name of the island came from, and this story turned into a legend and found its place in the literature.

This project has two main purposes. One of them is the promote this wonderful cultural heritage together with its region among young Europeans. The second purpose is to share local myths and legends with each other and be able to discuss the impact of storytelling on the cultures of societies. We believe that every culture has its own stories that sometimes go beyond reality and leave an impact on the places.

The project is designed as a youth exchange for 40 youngsters from EU Programme Countries. As the legend of Akdamar believed to happen during the Spring, that’s when we are planning to organize the exchange. The activities will take place both in the Akdamar islands and near locations. Participants will stay in a full board accommodation and all the logistical arrangements during the exchange will be organized by the project team. The exchange will last for 8 days in order to give enough time and space for each partner and their participants to share their myths and legends with us.

We are looking for partners that are interested in storytelling, cultural heritage, myths and legends. It is highly important to include partner countries that have myths of their own. Please mention this in your e-mail if you would like to be considered.
