Mindful Wilderness: Disconnect to Reconnect

A 14-day Youth Exchange in Romania near Călimani National Park using bushcraft to build resilience, trust, and self-esteem in youth with fewer opportunities.

Modern youth face unprecedented levels of anxiety, digital dependency, and social isolation. For young people with fewer opportunities (social, economic, or geographical obstacles), these challenges are often compounded by a lack of access to mental health resources and supportive environments."Mindful Wilderness" is a 14-day Youth Exchange that uses bushcraft and outdoor education not just as survival skills, but as powerful therapeutic tools. Hosted in the breathtaking, off-grid environment of the Călimani Mountains in Romania , we will use a "Digital Detox" methodology to help vulnerable young people disconnect from their screens and reconnect with themselves, nature, and each other.

By mastering tangible skills (building eco-shelters, fire-making, navigating), participants will experience immediate success, which drastically boosts their self-esteem. The wilderness will serve as a safe space to build resilience, emotional regulation, and deep social trust.

What we will do:
- Basecamp Preparation (5 days): Hosted at Farkas Cabin (Toplița, Romania). Team building, safety training, and mental preparation for the off-grid experience.
- Off-Grid Expedition (6 days): Camping in the wild. Learning basic bushcraft, teamwork, and undergoing a complete digital detox.
- Guided Reflection (Debriefing): Daily campfire sessions focusing on emotional check-ins, processing frustration, and translating survival achievements into everyday life skills.
- Evaluation & Reintegration: Returning to the basecamp to process the experience and plan local follow-up actions.

Project overview

Mindful Wilderness: Disconnect to Reconnect is a project by
Asociatia Forcamp
taking place
from 2027-04-02 till 2027-10-31
This project relates to:
Youth Exchanges
and is focusing on:
  • Anti-discrimination
  • Coach for Youth Initiative
  • Environment
  • Health
  • Innovation
  • Integration
  • Non-formal learning
  • Sustainable development
This project can include young people with fewer opportunities like
  • Social obstacles
  • Economic obstacles
  • Cultural differences
  • Health problems
  • Geographical obstacles
The target group: Our project specifically targets young people (aged 18-30) who face overlapping barriers that hinder their personal development, mental well-being, and access to international opportunities. Social & Economic obstacles: Youth living in state care, dealing with family breakdown, or coming from low-income households where mental health support, outdoor recreation, or travel are financially out of reach. Geographical obstacles: Young people residing in remote, rural areas or isolated communities with limited infrastructure and zero access to youth work or international mobility programs. Cultural differences: Marginalized youth, including ethnic minorities, who face social exclusion, discrimination, or integration challenges in their daily lives. What kind(s) of support is needed for the project: To ensure full inclusion and a physically/emotionally safe learning environment, the following support mechanisms are strictly implemented: Financial & Material Support: We completely remove economic barriers by providing 100% of the necessary technical mountain equipment (tents, winter sleeping bags, backpacks, rain gear) for free. Partners should pre-finance travel costs so participants do not have to advance their own money. Psychological & Mentoring Support: We require partner organizations to provide strong pre-departure emotional preparation. During the mobility, group leaders (ideally with a social work or psychology background) must help facilitate daily guided reflection sessions to help participants process the "digital detox" and translate their wilderness survival achievements into everyday resilience. Accessible Learning: We need group leaders to support participants with language barriers, ensuring instructions and safety protocols are fully understood through peer-to-peer translation and visual demonstrations.
