MARS - Mainstreaming Anti-Racism in our societies

Context
Building on the developments of protests run by Black Lives Matter movement, and the European reflection of the status of racism and anti-racism in our societies, we have asked ourselves what is the role of youth work in the anti-racism movement. There are a series of questions that we as a community need to ask like How youth work contributes to anti-racism?, Is youth work anti-racist?Are youth workers prepared to deal with the challenging questions, and deal with difficult emotions of participants? And finally how do we understand and do our activities in relation to racism - as something on the individual or systemic level? Are we aware of our own micro aggressions that we reproduce in our lives and in our work with people??
After almost a decade of working on the concept of invisible racism and implementing various projects related to the topic, we would like to share our expertise with other youth workers and mainstream anti-racist work as one of the essential elements of our everyday practice with young people.

What are the learning objectives of this TC?

MARS aims at equipping youth workers with essential knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to mainstream anti-racism in their daily activities with young people. The training will be based on the manual called CONSTELLATIONS - the manual for working with young people on the topic of racism and invisible racism, which is about to be published. This manual was written by Cazalla Intercultural together with partners of the STAR project and will be published in October 2020 on the project web: invisible-racism.eu

The objectives of the training are the following:
to prepare youth workers, and trainers for the new challenges related with racism, invisible racism and microaggressions
to explore our understanding of racism including the issues like white privilege, microaggression, color-blindness, power relations etc.
to offer the tools to work on those topics directly with young people
to further promote good treatment as an approach to be used in the youth work
to reflect on the role of youth work in the mainstreaming of anti-racism and create the advices on how to do it.
