Jazz music has the power to link people from different countries. We will create a orchestra with people from different places but united by the love for jazz.
"A.Passaglia" Liceo Artistico-Musicale is located in Lucca, one of the most beautiful and full of history city of Tuscany,in Italy. Lucca is famous for its walls, to be the birthplace of numerous composers such as Giacomo Puccini, Luigi Boccherini, Alfredo Catalani and to host numerous cultural and music festivals (including Lucca Comics & Games, one of the most important comics fair in the world). The high school is composed of two different courses of studies: art and music. The art course includes different learnings such as architecture, multimedia, design and fine arts.
The Jazz Band in the school is a relatively new group but very active and dynamic thanks to the teachers and the students that are involved. In the academic year 2018_2019 the band is composed of 22 young musicians that play the following instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Keyboard, Singer, Bass, Drums.
Our project ”JAZZ WITHOUT BORDERS” has three main targets:
• to create links among young musicians of different countries and musical cultures through the universal language of jazz
• to expand the knowledge of the participants in music repertoires linked to musicians of their own home land and coming from other countries
• to increase skills of playing in a big group such as a jazz orchestra and to gain confidence, initiative and capacity of cooperation
The project we intend to pursue is to form a mixed jazz orchestra with participants from different music schools with a repertoire of jazz music. Through the selected repertoires we would like to highlight the traditions, the local musicians, the places and also the migratory processes that have affected the different countries and that have influenced the sounds and the evolution of Jazz music.
We intend to propose music songs and different styles of Italian jazz musicians who emigrated abroad and musicians who lived in our country even for a short period (for example Duke Ellington or Chet Baker who were part of the musical life of Lucca in the fifities and sixties). In this way, we intend to enhance the cultural and musical heritage of both our and foreign countries. Partners will be asked to share music, songs and arrangements that are related to their places and musicians of their own land. Through the exchange program the participants will be able to know the various repertoire.
PARTICIPANT PROFILE
The project will select 10/12 participants from three different countries, they must be between 14-20 years old, be able to play at a very good level and show interest in jazz music and improvisation.
RESULTS
We want to produce many results through this project. First of all at least one public concert in every country that host the youth exchange, with music pieces prepared during the period of exchange. In addition to that: workshops, seminars, lessons will be activated for the participants of the exchange. Cultural visits, shared experiences and meetings will be another important part of the project.
