Information silos in European rural areas

The increased mobility of people, especially younger populations, towards urban areas results in profound
changes to demographic structures especially in rural areas that exhibit declining population numbers and a
relatively elderly population structure. As a consequence of their age and isolation, people living in rural
areas are prone to live in information silos fueled by misinformation through social media. Hence, people
living in rural areas are less likely to support democracy and EU solidarity than those who live in urban
centers (European Union 2020). These sentiments increase among senior populations who are not actively
engaging in the digital realm and are passively receiving information. Therefore, misinformation in rural
areas can impact European politics and stability. For this reason, the project aims to raise awareness in
rural populations in Italy, Spain, Croatia and Hungary about the problem of misinformation through the
establishment of a European intergenerational dialogue and training that strengthens social cohesion and
decreases vulnerability of people living in rural areas.
