Statistics show that the number of overweight and obese children and adolescents has increased dramatically in recent years. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2016, more than 41 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese. In addition, the prevalence of obesity in adolescents aged 12-19 years has increased tenfold in the past four decades, from 11% to 18%.
This youth project on obesity is an initiative aims at educating young people about the dangers of obesity and encouraging them to adopt healthy lifestyle habits. The importance of such a project lies in the fact that childhood and adolescent obesity is a growing global problem that can lead to various health issues, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
The objectives of a youth project on obesity includes:
- Raising awareness about the causes and consequences of obesity
- Encouraging young people to adopt healthy eating habits and regular physical activity
- Promoting a healthy body image and self-esteem
- Building leadership and teamwork skills among participating youth
Tackling obesity requires a multi-sectoral approach, and involving young people in initiatives that promote healthy lifestyles is a crucial part of the solution.
