GREEN SIGNAL: Evidence-Based Sustainability for Youth Programme

Sustainability-related messages are increasingly present in social media, advertising, and daily consumption choices. Young people are often caught between two extremes: either distrusting all “green” claims as greenwashing, or accepting them without questioning. This situation creates misinformation, loss of trust, and rising eco-anxiety.
GREEN SIGNAL addresses this challenge by empowering young people to critically evaluate sustainability claims through evidence, transparency, and traceability—without increasing fear or hopelessness. The project transforms young participants from passive consumers of “green content” into active, critical, and responsible communicators.
Objectives
The project aims to:
Strengthen young people’s ability to identify and assess sustainability claims
Enable participants to recognize common greenwashing strategies
Promote solution-oriented, non-alarmist environmental communication
Support local dissemination through youth-led mini sessions after the exchange
Target Group
Young people aged 18–30 from 5 countries (including Turkey)
Priority for young people with fewer opportunities
Each national group: 6 youth participants + 1 group leader (18+)
Methodology
GREEN SIGNAL is built around a gamified “detective” learning journey, using non-formal education methods such as:
Gallery walks and case investigations
Evidence-based questioning and verification tools
Role-based teamwork and peer learning
Reflection sessions addressing eco-anxiety and wellbeing
Learning follows a simple and memorable cycle:
Spot it → Test it → Share it
Key Activities
One 7-day youth exchange hosted in Bursa
Pre-exchange national preparation (“claim hunting”)
On-site learning activities including a field day or simulation
Co-creation of youth-friendly dissemination formats
Design of local mini-sessions for post-exchange transfer
Expected Results
Increased critical thinking and media literacy among participants
A lightweight youth-created output: Green Signal Detective Case File
Prototype “evidence-based” micro-content designed by young people
Strong multiplier effect through local follow-up activities
Impact & Sustainability
Participants return home with a ready-to-use 60–90 minute local activity format, allowing easy replication without high costs. By focusing on skills rather than fear-based messaging, GREEN SIGNAL supports long-term engagement with sustainability issues and reduces eco-anxiety.
European Added Value
Sustainability communication and greenwashing are shared challenges across Europe. By bringing together young people from different countries, GREEN SIGNAL fosters intercultural learning, shared standards of evidence, and responsible environmental citizenship aligned with Erasmus+ values.
