Empowering Rural Women and Girls Through Literacy and Technology

Context: The Situation of Rural Women and Girls in Zoumi, Province of Ouezzane
Zoumi, located in the Province of Ouezzane, is a rural area where women and girls face significant educational and economic challenges. Despite the efforts of the Provincial Delegation for Combating Illiteracy in Ouezzane to combat illiteracy in Arabic, there is still a large gap in access to foreign language education and digital skills development.
Limited educational opportunities: Many women and girls in Zoumi have never had access to formal education, or they dropped out at an early age due to financial constraints, household responsibilities, or societal expectations.
High illiteracy rates in foreign languages: Arabic literacy programs have been successfully implemented by the Provincial Delegation for Combating Illiteracy in Ouezzane, yet access to French and English education remains scarce, limiting opportunities for communication, employment, and global connectivity.
Lack of technological skills: Most women in the region have little to no exposure to computers and the internet, making it difficult for them to access online resources, digital services, or remote work opportunities.
Economic dependency: With low literacy rates and minimal digital literacy, many women in Zoumi remain financially dependent on male family members, which limits their ability to make independent decisions or pursue economic growth.
The Provincial Delegation for Combating Illiteracy in Ouezzane has played a key role in improving Arabic literacy rates through various local initiatives. However, there is a pressing need to expand literacy programs to include French, English, and digital literacy to ensure full integration into the modern workforce and information society. This project seeks to complement and build upon existing literacy efforts by introducing foreign language and technology education as essential tools for empowerment.
4. Objectives
Improve literacy rates among rural women and girls.
Introduce French and English as tools for communication and economic mobility.
Teach basic digital literacy, including internet navigation, smartphone use, and cybersecurity.
Enable participants to use technology for education, entrepreneurship, and job readiness.
Foster community engagement and long-term empowerment for women in rural areas.
