Preparedness and risk management skills are as important as effective response during disasters, and they are all parts of a whole.
Earthquakes, floods, fire, etc. Every individual of the society should be conscious of disasters and first response groups should be formed with solidarity. Human communities now need widespread and accurate training on disaster and emergency management. Preparedness and risk management skills are as important as effective response during disasters, and they are all parts of a whole. Based on this reality, it is necessary to give importance to the right educational content and practices, information and awareness-raising activities in order for human societies to be resistant to disasters.
Today, although studies on this subject are carried out in schools or other institutions, courses and public service announcements in Turkey, the EU and other world countries, these studies do not cover all the individuals that make up the society. Adults living in rural areas who do not/cannot attend these schools or courses and have low socio-economic welfare levels cannot benefit from these trainings. Another mistake in our approach to disasters is that only individual precautions are taken regarding risk management. However, every individual has social responsibilities as well as personal responsibilities against all possible dangers. For this reason, education activities should be carried out widely at all levels of the society in order to create a disaster-resilient society. The common wisdom in the world today is to reduce disaster risks, but effective disaster management should be taken into consideration at least as much. For this reason, it is very important to create a sustainable social disaster culture for disaster-resilient societies, to reduce disaster risks and to construct risk and disaster management.
