CALL FOR PARTNERS Post-capitalism summer school

Practical initiatives and patterns from the de-growth mindset as inspiration for youth to develop solutions for the future society

In the light of climate change, COVID-19 pandemic, accelerating migration - the necessity for a change in patterns of how we work, live, build social contacts and interact with others in dense urban environments, has become obvious. Global climate activism movements like Fridays For Future and Extinction Rebellion, and adjustments of daily life to limit the spread of the pandemiс, have shown that a solidarity driven common movement against capitalism pushing environmental issues is possible. When the European community is standing at the crossroads, young people are the ones who will have to take the lead and decide, in what kind of world they want to live in. And it is the task of today's youth workers to support and guide the youngsters into the unknown future.

For some decades scientists, philosophers, and economists have been exploring the realm of de-growth, also known as post-capitalism - a holistic system, an essential economic strategy that gives society a better alternative to the ever-growing - never-ending resource illusion of capitalism. The basic values of degrowth - such as equity, inclusion, solidarity, environmental justice, sufficiency - correlates with the democratic values that the EU has put at the center of its youth policy. The question is - how to link these values with the aspects of daily life, how to make choices and decisions that bring us closer to the world, where we all would like to live.

Responding to the need for a change in the post-pandemic climate-change-pressured society in densely populated multicultural urban neighborhoods, the project Post-Capitalist Summer School aims to re:evaluate and promote the tools of non-formal education to introduce youth with practical initiatives and patterns from the de-growth mindset to come up with ideas and solutions for the future society and foster trust in a possible change.

We will bring together a group of youth workers from EU and neighboring countries to explore the existing post-capitalist practices, get inspired from them and discuss how these practices can be applied in the youth work through participation in a 5-day long study visit in Berlin. It will be followed by a 7-day seminar in one of the Eastern Europe Partnership Countries, building capacity in the field of youth work of their organisation. Part of the seminar activities will be made public in order to increase the impact of the project for the wider audience. The content of the project activities will be documented in a zine and social media adjustable contact, to reach out the target groups - the project partners will organise follow- up workshops in their own countries, to reach the local youth and promote project ideas. The activities will be implemented between October 2020 and September 2021.
