A Chance for Change

This project will develop educational methods and tools to address the root causes that lead to GBV and gender discrimination, as they impact on young people.

The “A Chance for Change: Empowerment & Restoration” (C4C) project, has been designed to bring together a cross-sector strategic partnership of six organizations from the UK, Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Italy and France, to develop innovative, community-led educational methods and tools to help address the root causes that lead to GBV and gender discrimination, as they impact on young people.

The project will also design and accredit an e-course that will increase the knowledge, skills and confidence of youth workers and peer educators when working with young people in the area of GBV and gender discrimination.

BACKGROUND
Gender-based violence is a phenomenon deeply rooted in gender inequality, and continues to be one of the most notable human rights violations within all societies. Both women and men experience gender-based violence but the majority of victims are women and girls.

Gender-based violence and violence against women are terms that are often used interchangeably as it has been widely acknowledged that most gender-based violence is inflicted on women and girls, by men. However, using the ‘gender-based’ aspect is important as it highlights the fact that many forms of violence against women are rooted in power inequalities between women and men.

In our modern European societies, gender-based violence (GBV) continues to be a widespread phenomenon impacting on young people's lives regardless of their religion, ethnicity, socio-economic status or level of education.

C4C aims to tackle stereotyped attitudes and behaviours shaping gender inequality leading to discrimination and violence among young people through a bottom-up approach. The ultimate objective is to create and pilot a youth-led, media-based educational model for youth workers focusing on restorative justice preventative methods that will help reduce stereotyped attitudes within informal and formal educational environments, promoting a safe and inclusive culture that will help reduce the likelihood of GBV amongst young people.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

Educational Approach
Combine innovative educational approaches (e.g. media literacy concepts and tools) with restorative justice to create and pilot new and accredited capacity building material for youth workers to prevent GBV

Empower Young People
Empowering young people to get involved in the project through volunteering and social action.

Increase capacity
Increase capacity of 600+ youth workers, peer educators and other members the community (awareness, knowledge, capacity to develop and transmit own critical thinking/awareness)
