The school in Sosnowiec has been an educational institution for over sixty years. Today it comprises two types of the:junior and senior high schools. It is located in a disadvantaged area;in the old part of town, next to an industrial plant and a railway junction. The families who live hare are aften in bad socio-economic situation, mainly due to the relatively high rate of unemployment and rather low living standard. Some of our students come from such background. They often have emotional problems and also generate difficulties of educational nature.
Over the years the school staff have undertaken various measures to prevent such students from early school leaving, depravation, drug taking and consequently social exclusion. The school employs a school advisor and a psychologist to help teachers cope with their students problems. It also has a day-care centre where children can spend their free time in an active way and be helped with doing homework. Thanks to the cooperation with Municipal Benefit Angency and Social Security Department, the poorest students get free dinners and scholarships. We organise numerous debates, workshops and meetings professionals.
The school staff see participation in the EU programmes as another chance to enable the disadvantaged children to travel abroad and experience something new and good. Moreover, the project will be the opportunity for them to learn how to solve problems effectively and communicate without violence.
