UMAR – União de Mulheres Alternativa e Resposta is a Portuguese feminist non-governmental organization founded in 1976, in the aftermath of the April Revolution. It works to promote gender equality, defend women’s human rights, and combat all forms of violence and discrimination based on gender.
UMAR develops its work through political activism, public advocacy, education, research, and community-based intervention. It has a strong presence in preventing and responding to gender-based violence, including domestic violence, sexual violence, human trafficking, and harmful practices, offering support, information, and empowerment to women and girls.
The organization is also deeply involved in feminist education, working with schools, universities, and communities to promote citizenship, equality, sexual and reproductive rights, and critical awareness of patriarchal structures. UMAR actively participates in national and international networks, contributing to policy development and social change.
With a long history of grassroots action and feminist resistance, UMAR remains committed to building a more just, inclusive, and equal society for all.
