In Italy, science has always been considered a subject for specialists only, difficult and often inaccessible. Investigating the causes of this "fear of scientific culture", we find in some cases the lack of serious dissemination activity aimed at the masses. In fact, it is not easy to attract the attention of an unprepared public to a scientific topic that is complex in itself and, even more so, to simplify it and make it understandable to "non-experts".
Sofos was founded in 2006 in Bologna with the aim of raising public awareness of the issues of science and innovation.
The association's dissemination activity covers various sectors of science, making use of diversified intervention strategies: conferences aimed at schools and cultural associations; scientific shows, virtual reality activities and workshops aimed at schools, cultural associations and tourist organisations; laser evenings of observation of the celestial vault with astronomers accompanied by musicians and actors; creation of paper and/or multimedia information material; support for students in extracurricular study activities.
The association's main target is young people, to whom it pays particular attention with meetings in schools of all levels.
