Shadow casters

Shadow Casters are an award-winning creative collective, an artistic organization registered with the Ministry of Culture in the Republic of Croatia in operation since 2001, and as a registered non-governmental organization since 2006. The aim of Shadow Casters is to foster a series of professional activities for the development and promotion of various forms of cultural exchange, production and advocacy, particularly in the field of an independent cultural sector. The organization Shadow Casters is dedicated to the study space, architecture and social dynamics of space, architecture and construction, as well as offering quality and innovative and educational content for children and young people during their free time. During the seventeen years of work and public activity, the Shadow Casters have achieved more than 250 collaborations with professionals from more than 30 countries and realized over 50 educational, theatre and film projects and events on 4 continents.

One of the most important parts of our work is the creation and delivery of quality educational programmes and activities for children and youth during their free time, primarily related to the media literacy, consumption, and creation of film and media content and programmes that reflect urban, architectural, architectural and historical heritage. The programme related to media literacy is called FROOOM. The main idea behind that programme is to supplement the school curriculum with content related to media, media literacy and filmmaking through innovative and interactive learning in the non-school environment led by renewed Croatian experts in the field of filmmaking, culture, pedagogy etc. The main target group of the programme is children ages from 8-16, from towns all over Croatia. So far FROOOM has been organized in six Croatian counties and 10 cities and has been organized every year since 2012. Over one year more than 600 children are engaged through Froom and the final product of their work are a number of short films, documentaries, commercial, experimental and animated films. Some of the works of our children are competed at international film festivals and are presented as examples of good practice in various meetings and conferences. The Froom activities are dependent on the different sources of funding; so far we have successfully raised enough funds to implement the Froom cycle each year. Clearly expressed children needs for this kind of alternative way of learning and their satisfaction keeps us motivated to expand our activities to more children and more communities and to lift up our programme on a higher level.
