Programme info

Orphanage:

Volunteering with the children in our orphanage is one of the most rewarding experiences for our volunteers. If you choose to do volunteer work at our orphanage, you need to be adaptable, flexible and prepared to face and hear heartbreaking stories of the children's backgrounds. The following schedule has been developed to provide the children with a weekly experiencethey can come to expect and one that helps them become the young adults they dream of
becoming. It is important to note that this schedule can change during the year depending on
whether or not school is in session. During the school year the Volunteer will assist with their
homework and reinforce that day’s lesson plan. Each day the Volunteer will also assist Nalongo in
meal preparation, kid’s hygiene, and getting ready for the day’s activities.

Full and half-day teaching and playing sessions

Monday (Art/Music/Dance)

Tuesday (Math)

Wednesday (English)

Thursday (World Geography/African History)

Friday (Games and weekly trip arranged Volunteers)

Your suggestions for the children are always welcome and educating them about your country and its
culture is very important. Always remember that you arrive with special gifts that need to be shared and we desire to learn from you so please let us know how you think these beautiful children can takeadvantage of your being here. They will say Webale! (Thank You!)

Kazo and Nabweru Villages:

Teaching and Youth Work:

Volunteers choosing to work at either the Kazo or Nabweru Village will be placed on a project that best
suits their individual goals. Projects exist that include after school and summer school education as well
as youth work and mentoring. Volunteer teachers can teach English, mathematics, science, geography,
social sciences, history, physical education, art and music.

For those choosing youth work and mentoring you will be paired with a local village coordinator who will
assist and work with you to engage with young minds and hearts so they can learn about what options
are available for them even though they are poor and uneducated. The volunteer should be ready to share
their experience and knowledge on how best to conduct oneself to become a contributing member of
society and how to look for work, interview, and network to find the path they were always meant to
follow.

Building/Renovation Projects:

The majority of money appropriated for building projects comes from money raised by the Volunteer in advance of his or her arrival. With these funds Pearl Volunteers can start or continue a project to build or refurbish a school or install a much needed water system. Building project program details are posted on this site (link here) with the total cost necessary to complete the project and where it stands at
the current moment. We ask all our volunteers to fund raise in advance of their joining us on a building
project. 100% of the money you raise will be used for the project you work on during the time you are working on it. A Volunteer should expect to raise a minimum of $125.00 for every week they plan on being here. This money is critical to make the dreams of completing these projects a reality and to insure we have the materials necessary to keep you busy during you stay. If you plan on coming as a group of
volunteers then you should set a goal of raising between $700.00 and $1300.00 for the project you will be working on. With that money and your helping hands we can accomplish a great deal together. See our page on building projects that lay out specific costs for completion.
