National Organization of Romanian Scouts

The purpose of Scouting in Romanian society is to contribute to the education of young people through a system based upon an Oath and a Law, to aid in creating a better world, in which people are fulfilled as individuals and carry out a constructive role in society.
• Year of creation- 1990
• NORS is a full member of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (www.scout.org).
• Members - type and number: around 2300 scouts and leaders in 49 local centers
• Key areas or work: non-formal education based on Scout Method
All members of the Scout Movement, and therefore the members of NORS, are required to adhere to a Scout Promise and a Law reflecting the principles of Duty to God, Duty to others and Duty to self, and inspired by the Promise and Law conceived by the Founder of the Scout Movement, Sir Robert Baden Powell.
The National Organization of the Romanian Scouts has an educational offer for 14 years (from 7 to 21 years old). This offer is continuous and based on an annual non-formal curricula adapted to each age branch. Each curricula contains 20 detailed meetings (lessons). Our activities are dedicated to young people aged between 7 and 21 years old. They are divided on age branches as follows: cubscouts 7-10 years, scouts 11-14 years, explorers 15-18 years, rovers 18-21 years. They have a wide range of activities concerning social and ecological education, but also first-aid rules and life in nature. The main method of education is learning by action. This is an extremely used method in the organization.
One of the main purposes of Scouting is to incourage young people into take action. The activities young people are involved into during their time as Scouts prepare them for their adult life, as well as develop skills that are not usually included in the normal school program.
Scouting in Romania, as in every other Scout organisation in the world, recognises that volunteers play an essential role in the Movement and National Scout Organisations are encouraged to value this important resource. In the past years, NORS has been investing time and resources into the training and development of new pedagogical materials, both for the leaders in the organisation and its scout members.
At the moment NORS is one of the biggest youth organisations in Romania, being a member of the Romanian Youth Council (Consiliul Tineretului din Romania- CTR), and having several partnerships with institutions and ministries like the Ministry of Education
