The Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) is the central driver of the Maltese Government’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) policy, programmes and initiatives in Malta. Employing 327 professionals, MITA’s role is to deliver and implement the assigned programmes as set out in the Digital Malta National ICT Strategy 2014 - 2020, and as directed by the Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness and Economic Growth. MITA manages the implementation of ICT programmes in Government that enhance public service delivery and provide the infrastructure needed to execute ICT services to the Government and Maltese citizens. MITA is also responsible to propagate further use of ICT in society and economy and to promote and deliver programmes that enhance ICT education and use of ICT as a learning tool.
As part of the Digital Malta Strategy 2012-2020, the MITA has made a commitment to improve the lives of all citizens of Malta, with a particular focus on educators, at risk youth, and vulnerable groups. The MITA implements projects that bridge the digital divide, promote the use of technology in all aspects of society, and encourage professional development and lifelong learning. This Erasmus partnership will positively impact educators and their students who are at risk of early school leaving and can be achieved through targeted efforts that challenge traditional pedagogies and encourage innovative teaching practices. Educators, students and their parents will become more aware of how ICT and serious educational games greatly impact and improve all aspects of one's life. The MITA strives to embark on projects that enrich the educational and skills portfolios of local and European educators and promote synergies, sharing of best practices, cooperation and cross-fertilisation between the fields of education and technology.
MITA is a dynamic and knowledge-driven organisation that prides itself on being at the forefront of innovation and technology. The Agency thrives on the culture of being a cutting-edge IT services player. MITA prioritises national ICT targets, and embraces open standards and technologies as a matter of policy. The Agency builds, nurtures and sustains excellent industry relations and partnerships both locally and internationally. As referred to in the Digital Malta Strategy, Government supports the use of technology in education, the local nascent digital games industry and collaborations with academic institutions in order to ensure that the supply of upcoming graduates meets the Industry’s demand.
Many of the educational initiatives are managed by the Digital Outreach Unit (DOU) within MITA. The DOU is responsible for helping to achieve widespread digital literacy for all citizens through education and awareness programmes that boost ICT competences, media literacy and confidence, and promote the use of ICT in education. The Unit focuses on projects that benefit educators, students and vulnerable groups, including potential early school leavers, women, the disabled, and the aging population.
Past and present initiatives of the Digital Outreach Unit support the empowerment of Secondary School educators as 'agents of change' by promoting innovative ICT applications that enhance existing ICT curricula and educational programmes. The DOU also works closely with the MITA Innovation Hub, which supports the entrepreneurial activities of private sector start-ups and entrepreneurs with a focus on delivering change in the public service and sector through innovative ICT applications. The DOU delivers national projects through strong collaborations with local and international partners.
Members of the Digital Outreach Unit has an array of academic qualifications and numerous combined years of experience in Education, Business and Computing, ICT, European Studies, Public Policy and Organisational Psychology. The DOU has years of industry experience and a successful track record in project management and implementation locally and abroad, including training delivery, curricula and syllabi reform, research, and customer relationship management. The Unit has successfully executed a number of European-funded projects, including CIP and ESF at a national level.
