JOURNALISTS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) – North Macedonia

Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) is an independent, non-governmental and non-profit organisation established in 1996 and based in Skopje, North Macedonia. For nearly three decades, JHR has been actively working to promote human rights, social justice, environmental protection, gender equality, children's rights, youth participation and the inclusion of vulnerable communities.

Our mission is to empower individuals and communities, particularly those facing poverty, discrimination and social exclusion, through education, advocacy, research, capacity building and direct community support.

Our Work and Areas of Expertise

JHR develops and implements local, national and international projects in cooperation with civil society organisations, educational institutions, public authorities and European partners.

Our main areas of work include:

- Children's Rights and Social Inclusion: Supporting children and families experiencing poverty, discrimination and social exclusion.
- Youth Empowerment and Volunteering: Encouraging active citizenship, intercultural learning, solidarity and meaningful youth participation.
- Human Rights and Gender Equality: Promoting equal opportunities, women's rights, menstrual health and protection against discrimination and violence.
- Environmental Protection and Climate Justice: Raising awareness, strengthening environmental democracy and promoting sustainable development.
- Education and Community Development: Organising educational programmes, training sessions, workshops and community initiatives for vulnerable groups.

Daily Centre "Gnezdo" – A Place of Inclusion and Solidarity

One of our key initiatives is the Daily Centre "Gnezdo" (meaning "Nest"), established in Skopje to support children living in poverty, children at risk of social exclusion and families facing difficult socioeconomic circumstances.

The centre provides a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where children can learn, develop their skills, build friendships and receive individual support.

Our activities include educational assistance, homework support, creative and art workshops, sports and recreational activities, psychosocial support, life-skills development, hygiene education and community events.

Gnezdo also works closely with parents, social workers, schools, local institutions and volunteers to strengthen children's well-being and opportunities for social inclusion.

European Solidarity Corps and International Volunteering

JHR is an accredited European Solidarity Corps (ESC) Hosting Organisation and is committed to providing meaningful international volunteering experiences.

We welcome motivated young people aged 18–30 who are interested in social work, psychology, education, child development, human rights and community engagement.

International volunteers can contribute to the daily activities of Gnezdo by assisting with educational and creative workshops, supporting recreational activities, organising intercultural exchanges, developing inclusive learning materials and participating in community outreach initiatives.

Volunteers work alongside our experienced team and receive guidance, mentoring and opportunities for personal and professional development. Our volunteering activities promote solidarity, intercultural understanding, teamwork and active citizenship.

Partnership Opportunities

JHR is actively seeking cooperation with ESC Supporting Organisations and Lead Organisations across Europe to develop long-term volunteering partnerships and welcome international volunteers to North Macedonia.

We are particularly interested in partnerships with organisations working in youth development, social inclusion, child protection, education, community volunteering and human rights.

Through international cooperation, we aim to create opportunities for young Europeans to gain valuable experience while making a positive contribution to the lives of children and families in vulnerable situations.

We believe that solidarity begins with action and that every young person can contribute to building a more inclusive, equal and compassionate society.
