İstanbul Medeniyet University

Officially established in 2010 as a new public university, Istanbul Medeniyet University (IMU) is the 9th public university founded in Istanbul. As a research-oriented, innovative, and entrepreneurial institution, IMU consists of 11 faculties, 2 colleges and 4 institutes.
With 6:1 student-faculty ratio, IMU has around 3000 undergraduate and 2000 graduate students and 659 faculty members as of 2017. With 7 campus areas spread over an area of about 538,000 square meters, the University offers 26 undergraduate and 48 graduate and doctoral programs with an emphasis on graduate/post-graduate studies.
IMU is a young and dynamic higher education institution that provides academic education in a modern educational environment and with strong academic staff. Placing great emphasis on research, it offers a rich research environment for prospective researchers with its state-of-the-art labs, where scientists and researchers carry out research in the fields of engineering, medicine, natural sciences, arts and humanities, and health sciences.
IMU has 9 research centers and one training & research hospital. IMU’s research centers include the Research Center for Social Cooperation Area (SOCIOPARK), the Research Center for Children’s Education in Science, Lifelong Learning Center (SEM), Distance Learning Center (UZEM), Experimental and Clinical Research Center, Autism Research Center, Turkish and Foreign Languages Research Center, and Science and High Technology Research Center (IMU- BILTAM).
Currently, IMU’s laboratories include the Central Research Lab, Microsurgery Research and Training Lab, Engineering Lab, and Basic Sciences Lab, which are operational in an area of 800 square meters. Moreover, a new Central Research Laboratory is under construction in the University’s North Campus and will serve researchers from various branches of medical sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. Planned to become operational in 2018 with an indoor area of over 20,000 square meters, the Central Research Laboratory will be one of the largest R&D centers in Turkey and will house highly-developed labs constructed for various disciplines including core sciences, health and life sciences, environmental sciences, computational sciences and engineering, nanotechnology and material sciences. Also, the first tobacco analysis laboratory of Turkey is being established as part of this new laboratory complex in collaboration with the Tobacco and Alcohol Market Regulatory Authority (TAPDK).
To promote R&D activities under the university-industry collaboration model, IMU is also in the process of establishing a Technopark in its Akfırat campus in Tuzla in cooperation with leading national institutions such as the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), Independent Industrialists and Businessmen’s Association (MUSIAD) and Turkish Airlines (THY).
Regarding IMU-funded research, IMU currently has 2 projects from ECHO Program (European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations), 4 projects from Erasmus+ Program, 1 project from Horizon 2020 Programme (MC Individual Fellowship) and 43 national projects.
IMU has an office called Project Development and Coordination Office that gives information about all EU Programs and national funding programs to the academic staff by giving seminars and workshops. IMU Project Development and Coordination Office works as a help desk office and gives technical, administrative and financial guidance to the academic staff of IMU during both application and implementation processes of project cycles. IMU established IMU Technology Transfer Office in April 2018 with the aim of increasing awareness in technology transfer, funding mechanisms & intellectual property rights issues for researchers, stakeholders and integrating university’s research results into the industry.

In addition to cooperation with 45 universities under Erasmus+ program, IMU also offers student and faculty exchange through Mevlana and Farabi Exchange Programs. As an international university, IMU has signed 67 international collaboration agreements with universities around the globe.
IMU’s libraries serve its students and researchers in three campus areas. Database access is available both inside and outside the campus (VPN). Through the library services, the users can access 31 databases, over 3 million electronic books, more than 30,000 electronic journals, and over 2 million electronic theses. A brand new library building with an elegant design containing at least 1 million books is under construction on an indoor area of 25,000 m2 in the North Campus. Planned to provide 7 days / 24 hour access, this new central library will be housing one of the largest library collections in Turkey.
