The ijgd are an independent, non-profit association for international youth work, a recognised independent youth welfare organisation, and one of the largest and oldest workcamp organisations in Germany. Each year, we assist around 5,000 young people into volunteer work in Germany and abroad. We give them the opportunity to be creative, act in solidarity, take responsibility for themselves, and discover their own true potential and strengths.After World War II, students from Hanover organised the workcamps to assist in reconstruction, to dismantle negative stereotypes held by international contacts and to search for new democratic forms of life.
After the workcamps followed long-term voluntary services, today organised by six branches and their regional offices. Young people can get involved with the ijgd in their home country or abroad in mid or long-term voluntary services: in the social, ecological or political spheres or in the care and preservation of historical monuments. In all these fields of work the ijgd promote an understanding between cultures, enables the shaping of communities and establishes new horizons of experience.
