The “Madiba-AUT” association is a no profit organisation, founded in 2014 in Caltanissetta, Italy. The main aim of the organisation is to provide a community space to young people in Sicily where to debate, grow up and improve the surrounding environment. The choice of the name is given to a union official, Peppino Impastato, killed by the Mafia in 1978 (AUT radio was conducted by him). By contrast, “Madiba” was the nickname of Nelson Mandela. These two figures, even if geographically and historically distant represent for our association important inspiration sources, to reinforce and strengthen out commitment as active citizens. Throughout the years, the “Madiba-AUT” association gave the opportunity to young people to organise recreational and cultural activities such as: free Italian lessons to migrants, after-school for low income families, awareness action to tackle the Mafia phenomenon. The most remarkable success has been to provide a “safe space” for young people where to express their selves in a surrounding environment strongly affected by the criminal organisations and resignation.
