The Centre for Visual Arts and Research (CVAR ) mission is to promote the culture and history of Cyprus, both locally and abroad, and to become a forum for research, discussion and events related to education and culture, in the framework of reconciliation and understanding among all communities of Cyprus. Through the use of culture and art as major tools, CVAR seeks to make a meaningful bottom-up contribution towards creating and maintaining a climate of peaceful coexistence, respect and understanding of ‘the other’, thus laying the foundations for the reunification of the island’s people. It is designed to keep alive hopes for reunification of the island and peaceful co-existence between its various communities. Moreover, the CVAR organises educational reaching children between the ages of 6-18 years old. These programmes offer a new, more objective and historically all-embracing perspective of the island’s history and historical events, which hopefully will effect changes of attitudes and help introduce a new way of perceiving ‘the other’. These younger members of society, who have never lived in a united island and have very little contact with one another across the divide, are the most important target group of the CVAR’s programmes.
