Associação de Melhoramentos e Bem Estar Social de Pias is a big institution where works above 50 people, 10 of them are volunteers. The main activities are social and cultural, and the target groups goes from children, young’s, families and adults. It promotes different classes for seniors over 50 years and these classes are given by volunteers. The most successful classes are the acting and music, so motivation is about to have young people that can share with the older people their knowledge in the area of culture, traditions etc. so that the older people can do the same to the volunteer.
This is an intergeracional cultural project that we have where the youngs give to old people the knowledge that they have in the theater and music field, the interaction is amazing, where the youngs are very respected for the seniors and vice versa. We assist of a transmission of values, attitudes and behaviors that we think are missing in our society. This is a way of value the knowledge of youngs and the knowledge of seniors.
The aims of the institution beyond other activities are to develop cultural, educative and formative activities next to young and older adults; To promote intellectual, sportive and cultural activities, as also social and communitarian integration; To promote knowledge and cultural, scientific and technical formation in diverse areas of knowing and social relationships; To carry through courses, seminaries and other ways of study and work, as well as editing periodic and not-periodic publications; To stimulate the participation and organization of older adults in cultural and leisure activities; To spread local history, science, traditions, arts and other cultural situations between youth and older adults; To be a center of information and spread of services, rights and duties of youngs and older adults; To develop interpersonal and inter generational relations; We have domiciliary support for adults, a day center for older people, a sociability center for older people, a senior university, a Shelter for children and youth in risk, an activity Center for children, etc.
The Mission of the Association covers widely understood development of innovation in Portugal, including the popularization of modern technologies, support in development of the informatics society and building international cooperation for the development of science and economy.
Associations’s objectives in the educational and cultural area are:
• Development of innovation in Portugal and incitement of the need of new technologies and innovative solutions.
• Recognition of the innovative needs among the potential innovative recipients (small, medium and big enterprises, scientific units, local governments and other final beneficiaries) and creating a strong support for them during the implementation phase.
• Collaborating with the Universities, in receiving students for scholar training.
• Supporting scientists and scientific units working in those fields of science, which have a great input on the civilization, cultural and economical development of Portugal and the country’s prestige.
• Activities towards the development of science, culture and economy of Portugal.
• Supporting and initiating the social activity and supporting the information technologies development.
• Building the international cooperation for the development of culture.
Authorities of the Association consist of the Management Board and the Supervisory Board. The Management Board represents the Association in all matters before third parties and manages its current activity. Supervisory Board determines the courses of action and is obliged to exercise day-to-day supervision over the Association’s operations and their realization.
