ARTE.M artistic and culture association

Art, culture and life on Madeira bring us together. ARTE.M — Associação Artística e Cultural da Madeira is a nonprofit association based in Funchal, Portugal, creating opportunities for people to learn, express themselves and connect through creativity.

Our work brings together cultural education, artistic exploration and community participation. We support personal development, wellbeing and lifelong learning, giving people space to discover their abilities, develop skills and share their perspectives.

Ecology, sustainability, feminism and creative entrepreneurship are central to our activities. We explore environmental questions through art, reuse and sustainable craft practices. Through feminist perspectives, we address gender equality, women’s experiences and opportunities for participation. We also help artists and creative practitioners develop the confidence, knowledge and professional connections to turn their skills into sustainable livelihoods.

We see art as a starting point for curiosity, independent thinking and conversations that matter. Our workshops, talks, exhibitions, training courses and community projects involve local and international artists, educators and youth workers. We work with young people, adults, seniors, migrants and people with fewer opportunities, adapting our approaches to different experiences and needs.

Our team began developing artistic and educational projects in 2015, and ARTE.M was formally established in 2018. We have experience in Erasmus+, Creative Europe and other cross-sectoral grant programmes, collaborating with European partners on inclusion, environmental sustainability, wellbeing, youth participation and entrepreneurship.

Across Madeira, we cooperate with cultural institutions, community organisations and public-sector initiatives. Our home in Funchal is Art Gallery Caravel, our principal supporter and a close partner in developing our activities.

In early 2023, we opened International ARThub Madeira, a coworking and creative space for artists and other creative practitioners. It hosts discussions, workshops, training, exhibitions and collaborative projects, connecting local knowledge with international experience.

We welcome partnerships that give people practical opportunities to create, learn and participate, while strengthening the cultural and social life of their communities.
