Arci Movie

Non-profit organization promoting cinema and culture in Naples, Italy

Arci Movie was born in 1990 with the basic aim to give new life to the old movie theatre of the outskirt district Ponticelli, Cinema Pierrot, closed some years before, to give back to the area the only centre for cultural activity and social involvement. The association meets people simpathy and needs organizing the evening filmforum for families and many film projections for students and kids from schools of the surroundings. In two years time Arci Movie counted on 800 members and 6000 students attending the matinees.
In the meanwhile cinema Pierrot becomes an example at national level showing how no-profit contributes to the improvement of social conditions in the outskirts of metropolitan areas through a higher cultural offer. In the movie theatre Arci Movie invites to Ponticelli national and international personalities: among them Ken Loach and many other guests who appreciate the cultural engagement of the association.
In fact, apart from these social events, Arci Movie has always characterized its activities with special events, meeting with authors and directors. All this has been enriched by the two big summer events through which Arci Movie involves more than 100000 people over the season, collaborating with many small town of the Neapolitan area.
Since 1994 the organization begins to qualify its work on the territory for the youngers through educational and didactic projects; in particolar it promotes “Movielab – educational laboratories on cinema languages” and the cinema review for school “Lo schermo e le emozioni”, which involves thousand of young people every year. This strong activity flew in the creation in 2004 – in collaboration with Giffoni Film Festival, of “Piccola Bottega dei Filmmakers”, a festival entirely dedicated to productions of younger moviemakers. It has had 4 edition.
In 2002 some members of association found a production company, called Parallelo 41 Produzioni, which main feature is the promotion of the so called “Light Cinema”: low budget, digital technologies, reduced troupe, street location, actors and directors coming from real life.
One of this production, the shortcut “17 anni, quasi 18”, won in 2005 Turin “Sottodiciotto Film Festival” and, more recently, in 2009, the documentary Corde gained the Special Jury Award - Italiana Doc e il Premio Avanti (Avanti Award (Agency for the development of new Italian filmmaker) at Torino Film festival 2009.
In 2008 Arci Movie entered in a network, led by the Association “Cinema e Diritti”, with the aim to promote the realization of the first edition of Naples Human Rights Film Festival, which has had four editions. The festival is focused on the use of documentary as form of art able to show and to denounce our society by the strength of images.
In the autumn 2009, Arci Movie added to the consolidated reviews and activities on the territory of eastern Naples outskirts, the review “Astradoc. Viaggio nel cinema del reale”, a review on documentaries with the presence of artists and guests from Cinema’s world. In its first edition, and confirmed in the following two, the review registered the participation of 7000 spectators.
In 2009 itself, Arci Movie organized the first edition of an event dedicated to “Prix Jeunesse”, repeated in 2011.
In 2011 Arci Movie has contributed to the realization of “Venezia a Napoli – Il cinema esteso”: a new cultural appointment of Naples created by Cultural Department of Naples Municipality in collaboration with Mostra del Cinema di Venezia, Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali and the University of Naples “Federico II” and “Suor Orsola Benincasa”. The idea was to make a selection of movies coming from Venezia festival in order to give audience the chance to take part to movies screening of that film which commonly don’t circulate.
In 2012 Arci Movie begun to promote activities in I.O.CR.E.S.C.O – an enviromental educational project – in collaboration with other 40 subject operating on Estern Naples Territory. First objective of the project is to make people awareness and responsible about enviromental matters.

Arci Movie also collaborates with regional and national events who allow the Association to have a wide net of relationships fundamental for its cultural development: Città della Scienza, Torino Film festival, Festival Libero Bizzarri, Comicon, Premio Troisi, Galassia Gutemberg, Istituto Grenoble, Teatri Uniti, Teatro Pubblico Campano, Napoli Film Festival, Biennale di cinema Ragazzi di Pisa, Castellinaria-Bellinzona, Cantiere Italia, Cortocircuito, O’ Curt.
