The school is located 3 km from the city center. There are 740 students, 45 teachers and 6 assistant personnel in our school. We have a wide range of students including 18 refugees, 10 mainstreaming and 3 students with physical disabilities.
Our students are aged between 13-18 which corresponds to the 9th -12th grades according to Turkish educational curriculum.
We have 8 hours of classes on weekdays which include Maths, Literature, Geography, History, English, Physics, Biology, Philosophy, Chemistry, Music, Art, Physical Education and German. In our school, priority is given to studies aimed to develop the students' sense of self confidence, control and responsibility and activities take place to make our students acquire creative and critical thinking skills. Our students take part in national and international projects, learn two foreign languages to keep up the changes in the world.
We have 2 eTwinning and two ongoing Erasmus+ projects (a KA229 and a KA201) in our school, both of which are about social inclusion of disadvantaged students. The school also participated two Erasmus+ KA229 projects on effects of migration and multiple intelligences. We have seen great effects of these projects on both our students and the educators as well as families. Thus, the school not only wants to share their experiences with other schools, that are less experienced, but also wants to continue to implement projects.
We have some activities and projects in our school to increase the academic achievement and social competences of our students like BIGEP (a local project for improving the quality of education which is conducted by the Governorship of Balıkesir), social responsibility projects and clubs (folk dance, drama, poetry). There are football, handball and volleyball teams and students take part in some sport organizations like wrestling, Tae-kwon-do, swimming and athletics. There is a dormitory for 130 girls (out of 740 students of our school) who come from the villages or surrounding towns.
Students are generally disadvantaged in socio-economic terms as most of them are rural dwellers. There are over 30 single parented students who tend to be more introverted and shier compared to the other ones. In our school there are 10 SEN students who are integrated to regular classes but take supportive education. There are 3 physically disabled students and 18 refugees in our school. Although most students lack support from their families, they don't have any behavioral problems, they just don't know how to achieve because there aren't enough people around them to guide and support them except their teachers. Our students’ learning styles are also different, as are their personal interests and goals. We teach pupils for whom education is most important, but we also have to find ways to motivate other students who are on the brisk of dropout.
