Wild Paths to Participation – Adventure & Sport for Rural Youth Empowerment

Training Course

3-7 September 2025 | Sabaudia, Italy

A five-day (+2 travel day) experiential training course that equips youth workers with adventure-based and sport-for-development tools to ignite young people’s participation, wellbeing and soft-skills growth in Europe’s remote and rural areas.

What is it about?
Wild Paths to Participation is an immersive training that explores how adventure and outdoor sports can become powerful catalysts for youth engagement in Europe’s inner, rural and mountain areas. Building on the EU Youth Participation Strategy, the training demonstrates how place-based, adrenaline-light experiences — from trekking to cooperative team sports — can amplify young people’s voices, confidence, and sense of belonging while enhancing their mental health.

Objectives
- Introduce adventure-experiential-education and sport-for-development methodologies tailored to low-density territories.
- Strengthen youth workers’ competence in facilitating soft-skills (communication, leadership, resilience) and wellbeing through nature-based activities.
- Exchange inspiring rural participation practices and create transnational peer networks.
- Co-create ready-to-use mini-projects that participants will pilot with young people back home, using Erasmus+ Youth or European Solidarity Corps opportunities.

Training flow & methods
Day 1 – Setting camp: getting-to-know-each-other activities, needs analysis, introduction to experiential learning cycle
Day 2 – Adventure toolbox: workshops on low-threshold outdoor challenges, inclusive sport designs, risk management and mental-health-first approaches
Day 3 – On the trail: full-day field expedition combining navigation tasks, reflective stops and storytelling
Day 4 – From skills to participation: translating outdoor insights into community projects; youth participation ladder, stakeholder mapping, funding tips
Day 5 – Harvest & next steps: pitching project ideas, peer feedback, Youthpass reflection, network planning

Interactive inputs, micro-lectures, peer coaching and nightly reflection circles ensure everyone learns by doing and make clear links to their rural realities.

Outcomes & follow-up
Participants leave with:
- A validated adventure-sport session plan adapted to their local context
- A draft Erasmus+ project proposal or community action plan
- Extended rural-youth peer network and access to a resource pool of tools, checklists and facilitation guides

Costs

Participation fee

130 €

The participation fee is a shared-cost contribution that allows us to keep the training affordable while covering essential items that fall outside Erasmus+ reimbursement rules. Certain local expenses are ineligible. Each time we run water-based sessions, we must pay an access fee to the private owners of Sabaudia Lake. Throughout the week, we also absorb a seasonal surcharge from the venue, which is still operating at high-season rates in early September. The contribution helps ensure we can secure the lakeside facilities, safety support and quality outdoor equipment without compromising the course design or passing unforeseen costs on to fellow participants
